Outstanding Features of Mesopotamian Civilization
Dr. Jaafar Hadi Hassan
Mesopotamia is one of the earliest and richest civilizations where the first contracts of marriages and business transactions were ever recorded. Hundreds of thousands of tablets in the cuneiform script, most of which are still preserved today,
contain literary stories, myths and epics, translated into some ancient and modern languages. In the words of a specialist:
“It can be said without exaggeration that no other country in the world has yielded a wealth of ancient texts in the very form in which they were written thousands of years ago”. The Mesopotamians have written on many subjects such as medicine, astronomy and law. Their influence, through the Akkadian language, lasted for centuries around the region. This is the topic of our guest, Dr. Jaafar Hadi Hassan.
Dr. Jaafar Hadi Hassan studied Semitic Languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and Phoenician), Jewish Studies and History. He obtained a BA, an MA and PhD from the University of Manchester, and a BA and MA in Arabic Language and Literature from the University of Baghdad, Iraq. Dr. Hassan taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various universities around the world and has published books and articles on Jewish Studies and other subjects.
